About WSFM

West East hybrid

Classical music began flowing into Steamboat Springs in 1993, thanks to the musical passions of two women — Ann Rich and Jan Vail. They wanted more than country and pop, and began organizing support for bringing Mozart, Beethoven, and Copeland into the Yampa Valley.

Initial fundraising placed a receiver/transmitter unit on Emerald Mountain, and soon Denver’s KVOD classical feed became available in Routt County. To maintain support for licensing, tower rents, and equipment maintenance, a nonprofit was formed: West Slope FM. For the past decades, the Yampa Valley has continued to enjoy the finest musical compositions and performances available anywhere, thanks entirely to contributions from our Routt County listeners!

A couple of things have changed since those early days. The transmission equipment was moved to Storm Peak (Mt. Werner) to improve the signal and broaden the covered area. When KVOD switched to popular music (they’ve returned tothe classics now), WSFM switched too. We partnered with The Classical Network, WWFM, in Trenton, New Jersey, to provide the fine classical music you hear today. Incidentally, Steamboat Springs is the only recipient of this award-winning station outside the New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania area.

Other than that, it’s been all classics, all the time, for 25 years and counting. West Slope FM has a board of volunteers who oversee our operations. We’d like to introduce ourselves here, and invite you to contact any of us with questions or concerns. And of course, we urge you to contribute whatever you can to help us continue bringing the world’s finest music to the Yampa Valley.
